DESCRIPTION:The ELU-S Annual Conference will take place in Lisbon from September 1-3\, 2026. The conference will be hosted by the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. \nThe conference theme is: “Words or Deeds? The European Moment”. At a time of profound transformation\, Europe is navigating the gap between declarations and demonstrations\, between articulated values and their practical realisation. This year’s conference invites scholars\, practitioners\, and policymakers to examine what might be called “the European moment” – a period characterised by both possibility and precarity\, where the discrepancy between institutional rhetoric and concrete action is perhaps more visible and consequential than ever before. \nThe conference will feature a keynote speech by Prof. Isabel Feichtner and plenary events on Dignity and Sovereignty. \nMore information can be found at the ELU-S website.

DESCRIPTION:Under the overarching theme “Accountability under pressure: contemporary features of the reason of state”\, the REALaw Forum 2026 critically examines the evolving relationship between the notion of “reason of state”\, executive discretion and the rule of law in contemporary legal orders. Through comparative and doctrinal perspectives\, it explores how public authorities respond to challenges linked to economic governance\, national security\, crisis management and expert-driven policymaking\, and how traditional mechanisms of judicial and political oversight are reshaped in this context. Particular attention is given to the role of courts\, the transformation of political responsibility\, the legal implications of emergency governance and the contemporary revival of reason of state.
